Clinical depression can develop as early as elementary school. Dr. Xavier Amador, a psychologist and founder of the LEAP Foundation, notes that people with clinical depression can have a variety of symptoms including loss of interest in sports or friends. They tend to have negative thoughts about themselves, trouble sleeping, and weight gain or loss. If parents observe any of those things occurring, they should seek professional help for the child.
